Pirated St. Louis Bricks: Exhibit A

A long time ago, I wrote a piece on stumbling across some bricks with "ST. LOUIS" on them. They were located in the Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans. At the time, I was camera-less.

Well, I snapped a photograph of one of the bricks. It dawns on me now, of course, that this might simply be a legitimate brickmaker and not evidence of pirated bricks after all. But, a promise is a promise, so here's the offending (?) brick:

  1. That's a salvaged fire brick. Fire bricks typically line furnaces, ovens, smokestacks and chimneys. Weird to see it used in paving, but I guess someone liked the maker's stamp.

  2. I found a brick like this in a strange place, out in the woods near a state park. I brought it home with me as it seemed to be made of red granite. I was near Elephant Rocks State Park and couldn't comprehend why anyone would carve such lettering into a piece of granite.

I'm going to look at it again. Perhaps it is fire brick from an industrial furnace connected with the mining operations.
