A Benton Park West-Cherokee Street Rift?

“Most of the neighborhood residents in BPW don't go down to Cherokee street because they don't agree with what's happening or not happening in that stretch.”
by Bill Byrd

Believe it or not, that's a featured quote on Cherokee Street News. Other quotes, including one from me, praise Cherokee's unique renaissance, its civic culture, and its one-of-a-kind offerings. Yet this one clearly stands out. It's a very strong statement. Anyone care to give some background?

Well, obviously some people don't like what's happening on Cherokee or they don't like what's not happening on Cherokee. Looks like every possible objection possible is covered. Perhaps it's the lack of historic preservation codes? Maybe the lack of bars?

Yes, that is obvious. I think the point, though, is that the quote seems to authoritatively state that Benton Park West residents don't support Cherokee Street, for whatever reason.

I was confused by that quote. That's why I brought it to the attention of this blog (which does not credit my investigative work). Oh well.

I forwarded this post to Bill. Hopefully he'll be able to clarify.

^ Thanks.

I posted this to UrbanSTL, but there has not been a response yet.

It was a quote taken directly from Bill Byrd's mouth. The context was his response during a meeting that occurred for the ComeUnity Hub project that he helped kill before it could start. It was posted on there, I can only assume, to let others know what he said, not as a form of agreement.
